How fantasy scoring works

You pick an 11-player team from the two squads playing — within a salary cap (₹100 in-game points). Each player's real performance scores points: runs (+1 per run, +2 boundary bonus), wickets (+25), catches (+8), 30-run milestone (+4), 50-run milestone (+8), 100-run milestone (+16), economy bonuses for bowlers. Captain doubles the score (2x); vice-captain 1.5x.

Contest types

Head-to-head (2-player ₹20 entry, winner takes ₹38 after rake). Mini-league (10-100 players, multi-tier prize). Mega contest (10,000-100,000 players, top 30% pays, large prize pool). Higher-entry mega contests have larger first-place prizes but require ranking high in a crowded field.

Strategy notes

The most useful adjustment for new fantasy sports skill-game classification players: take risks on captain selection in head-to-head, play safe on captain in mega contests. In head-to-head the variance helps you win 30% of the time on a long-shot pick; in mega contests, where the field is large, the unique-pick value is small and the safe captain (e.g. opening batter) is the right call.

The math: a typical T20 score for an opening batter is 35-45 runs in 25-30 balls. At captain (2x), that's 70-100 fantasy points from one player. Picking captain right is the biggest single decision — a captain who scores 80 points doubles to 160; a vice-captain who scores 80 points scales to 120. The 40-point captaincy difference is often the gap between top-30% finish and bust.

Contest types and bankroll structure

Mega contests are pure lottery-tier — the top prize is dominated by professional fantasy players running 50+ tickets per match.

Common mistakes at IPL fantasy

Three patterns cost most. First, picking captain based on form streaks. A player who scored 80+ in the last three matches has hot-form bias in your head, but the next match is statistically independent. The captain pick should be based on opponent-match-up data (which bowler is the captain pick facing, what pitch is the match on) rather than recent form.

Second, ignoring the salary cap. Each player has a points-cost; your 11-player team must fit under ₹100 points. Filling the team with five premium captain-class picks at ₹10+ each leaves no budget for solid mid-priced players, and one premium-pick failure tanks the whole team. Balance is what wins mini-leagues.

Third, locking the team too early. The contest closes at first ball, but you can edit picks until then. Last-minute team news (injuries, toss decisions, pitch reports) often changes the optimal team. Lock in the team only after the toss, never before.

Captain selection — where head-to-head differs from mega contests

Captain selection is the single biggest decision in IPL fantasy, but the right strategy differs by contest type. In head-to-head (2-player contests), you only need to beat one opponent. That means a contrarian captain pick — someone the field is under-rating — can swing the match decisively when it lands. Variance is your friend in head-to-head; the captain who scored 80+ in one match is the one who wins your contest.

In mega contests (10,000+ players), the field is so large that contrarian picks rarely pay enough to outrun the volume. The safer captain pick — the obvious in-form opener, the wicket-leading bowler — wins the modal prize tier (top 30% payout) more reliably than the contrarian moonshot.

For new players: head-to-head with contrarian captain picks is the learning curve. You'll lose often but you'll feel the variance. Once you've played 30+ head-to-heads, switch to mini-leagues (10-100 players) for the middle-ground contest type. Mega contests are pure professional-fantasy territory; skip them until you have 50+ matches of feel.
